SETTING
The setting of this interesting novel is in Paris 1482.
MAJOR CHARACTER
1. Quasimodo
This man is a main actor of this novel. The appearance of this man is really far away from the word handsome. It means that he is absolutely ugly. He is not only has an ugly face but also weird hair color, rough hands, and of course hunchback. About his ability? Don’t make a good expectation about him because he is deaf and dumb. So people who are talking to him will get complicated problems because of that disability. But behind his ugliness and disability, he has a gently heart which always works when someone need his help.
2. Pierre Gringoire
He is a poet who lives in a miserable condition. He doesn’t have enough money even to buy a loaf of bread. Actually in his first carrier, he was a priest. But because he felt that he didn’t comfortable enough to be a priest, he changed his mind and became a poet. He is the luckiest person in this novel. Because in the last story, he got anything that he wanted, specially became a husband who had a beautiful wife.
3. Esmeralda
She is a beautiful gipsy dancer. She doesn’t have parents. She is a coke-bottle-figure and has a beautiful face. She is a person who became a target of the men major character in this novel. All of them wanted to be a wife of this woman, because this woman was really prefect. She has long-black-shiny-hair. And she is well-behaved too.
4. Claude Frollo
A priest in the church of Notre-Dame and already one of the most learned men in Paris. He is mysterious and coward. He is the man who was taking care of the hunchback since he found him in a miserable condition.
MINOR CHARACTER
1. Djali
Djali is an Esmeralda’s goat. He is clever enough and loyal to his master. He always became the best partner of Esmeralda.
2. Sister Gudule
She is an old woman in Paris. She is a woman. She hates Esmeralda very much. She will be getting mad if she is meeting a gipsy.
3. Poebus
He is a captain of Paris Army. He is well-built and handsome. He has a thick beard and big muscle. He doesn’t like to have a legal relation ship with woman (marry) because he has many girlfriend in his life (playboy).
SUMMARY
The novel started when Frollo found the hunchback in a miserable condition. He took the hunchback and gave him a job to be a man who was ringing the bell of Notre-Dame every day. In this story, Frollo and hunchback met a beautiful gipsy dancer named Esmeralda. They were falling in love with her and really wanted to become the Esmeralda’s husband. Not only those men who loved her but also the poet. Gringoire had desire to become the Esmeralda’s husband too. But unfortunately their love weren’t accepted by Esmeralda because she had her own husband figure which was nearly same with the Poebus’s appearance. The men were really getting mad when they knew that actually Esmeralda didn’t love them. The priest was the man who had the worst revenge to Poebus, so he killed him. That accident happened whe the captain had a meeting with Esmeralda so the people assumed that Esmeralda was the “actor” of that murder. The worst effect was Esmeralda was given a death penalty by the judge. But fortunately before he killed her, the hunchback save Esmeralda’s life and hid Esmeralda in a small room in a tower of Notre-Dame. In the last part of the novel, Esmeralda found her mom and the hunchback lost Esmeralda because carried her away from the church and they lived together.
MAJOR CONFLICT
The major conflict happened when the judge gave Esmeralda a death penalty and tried to kill her but she was saved by the hunchback who had deep love to her. But unfortunately he lost his chance to become a partner of Esmeralda’s life because she had had a husband.
THE END OF THE STORY
The story ends with sadness. Because the hunchback lost his dream to be the Esmeralda’s husband.
THE THEME OF THE BOOK
The theme of this book is we shouldn’t judge a person based on his/her appearance but his/her heart.
PERSONAL OPINION
I like this novel. I was totally grabbed by the story of the novel. The story is unique because it ends with sadness. Finally, I considered this novel is just right to read.
