Simplified Story
Ishmael was basically an open-minded Moslem child. He was living in a small village where the Islamic orthodox teachings named Ahyarujannah were miscellaneously disseminated. His father was the son of Islamic orthodox leader who had been spreading the Islamic orthodox beliefs with his pesantren. Similarly to Ishmael, Ali, the name of the father, was an open-minded person. Once he married a Christian woman named Christiana. Their marriage was actually a secret marriage since Ali’s father never agreed with such marriage.

One day in a gloomy night, Ali was stabbed on the chest. Nobody knew the murderer. Before he died, he told Christiana to raise Ishmael with Islamic belief by sending him to his father’s pesantren. The murder was giving such a deep gloomy mourn to Ishmael and Christiana. In order to survive in life, Christiana sold some groceries. She was raising his only child with affection and deep understanding of pluralism. Although she was Christian, he never asked his son to apostate his belief.

When Ishmael was 15 years old, Christiana sent him to Ali’s father pesantren. It was such a hard moment knowing that she would lose him for almost 10 years. In that Islamic orthodox pesantren, Ishmael’s pluralism thoughts collided with Islamic orhodox teachings which argued every single thing related to other beliefs. Slowly but sure Ishmael minds were changed. He became so narrow-minded.

What will happen to Ishmael and his mother? Watch us in November, 2011 at Sanata Dharma University Hall!
